Here a few of my quail paintings that I’ve done over time.

“Love” 24×30 Oil Painting – $1800 unframed

This is another painting started from my sketchbook on the train to Paso Robles. This takes place where the train was going through the back country hills along the tracks around the Oceanside area. In the foreground – two quail are seen cosy’d up on a lovely spring day. I wrote the word “Love” in purple directly above the top quails head.

“Couple of Quail” 20×24 Oil Painting – $1200 unframed

I began this painting about a couple of quail, sitting in the shadows of my succulent garden, protected in this safe haven. As I worked on it their personalities emerged and I began to see the female quail as about to have chicks, and the male is on alert to protect her. She is inward looking, and he is externally aware, a bonded pair creating a family. The colors in this are like a tapestry, richly woven threads of the pageant of life.

“Quail Crossing” 24×30 Oil Painting – $1800 unframed

This painting takes place in the neighborhood of Lomas Sernas, a lovely community of homes at the base of Bernardo Mountain. We have a lot of quail in our area, and I like to watch them run across the paths. It’s always the same posturing: with the Dad standing guard, Mom frazzled and running fast trying to keep the chicks all moving along, and the brand new chicks tottering along. It was easy to imagine this family of quail living under the sage and scrub brush somewhere long the trails.

“Quail Family” 24×30 Oil Painting – $1800 unframed

I get such a kick out of watching the quail run around our garden, and on the trails near where I live. Here is a mixed family of chicks from several seasons, two are tiny and young, one a little older and off exploring. I see the expressions on the parents as half crazed cautiousness, with Dad on patrol for danger, and Mom ever watchful. The young chicks are just awestruck with everything and stay close to Mom. The “teenager” is a little more secure and off exploring. The setting is our succulent garden, with the swaying pepper tree, the mountain in the distance and flowering succulents sending up beautiful stalks of dangling flowers. As always, the play of light and shadow fascinates me and I use it here by switching from warm to cool colors to create a lively scene.

“Peace and Joy” 20×24 Oil Painting – $1200 unframed

A family of quail are scampering across a southwestern landscape, as the sun makes itself known with a glorious sunrise bursting from behind the still dark mountain. The brilliant colors of new day permeate the darkness, bringing peace and joy.
