On the Easel – January 2014

The fall was a slow time to get a lot done on my paintings. I started a few and worked as much as I could but remodeling a condo took the best part of the day away. So I was delighted when in January I was finally able to devote some real time to work. Here are some in progress pieces that will finalize next week. Some of them are shown with the under painting still visible, and some are close to being done.

The Duck Pond – started from drawings and paintings I did in the desert in Rancho Mirage. This looks like a mess at the moment – lets hope the miracle of transformation happens – soon! A lot of the under painted color is still showing and the outlining needs to be reapplied.

The Long Wait – this looks like a painting I did in Santa Fe of the dog I grew up with – Sandy. This time I painted  Kira’s face, our beautiful little Golden.  This one will head to Taos to the The Ranch at Taos Gallery. Not a great photo of it- but this painting is finished.

Cosmic Agave – I am so excited about this one – I’m going really slow and using for my color cues a painting I did of a night scene – Agave Noche. I liked the color combination and I’m hoping to make it work again here. Partially done, agave stalks are still showing under painting and the sky isn’t done at all.

The Alpha Female of the High Road – several years running I’ve gone to the High Road Studio Tours outside Taos – and met this lovely girl at her Dad’s studio. I’ve purchased several of his pieces – beautiful gong like bells made from oxygen tanks and painted beautiful colors. There is a sign as you enter the dirt road drive that says something to the effect of  “This area patrolled by an Alpha Female keep your dogs in the car”. I loved that and have wanted to paint her pic ever since. She will also go the The Ranch at Taos gallery when I’m done. Miss girl dog is done but the rest is still under painting. I was working on a Indian Red gessoed background.

Red Truck Luck – I’ve been slowly dabbing away at this one for 6 months – since I returned from Santa Fe where I first saw the truck in the parking lot of Ft Marcy. I love the drama of the color in this one. Its a very vigorous red, this was a brand new truck not a rusted out wreck. It reminded me of a friend who had a brand new truck and took it out to the desert and immediately got it stuck in the mud and got it filthy trying to rev it out. It eventually and to be towed. Hope this truck has better luck!
