About Cathy Carey

I was born in Washington, DC. and grew up in Alexandria, VA. After 2 years at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC, I received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1987 I moved to San Diego and became an art director for a newspaper group, West Coast Community Newspapers. My style is a  “Contemporary Expressive Colorist”. I use color to capture an emotional sense of reality. My paintings have impressionist techniques, and vibrant expressionist color and rhythmic gestural brushstrokes.  The purpose is to paint what it feels like, not what it looks like. I want the movement and interaction of colors and shapes to feel like the rhythm and pulse of music and dancers.

Solo Flutist, Ruth Washington Mayhew, will be playing a selection of classical music during the reception.

Ruth Washington Mayhew just finished her 11th season as Symphony Pro Musica’s principal flutist.  In addition to playing for President Clinton at the White House, she has performed with many symphonies. Ruth received her Master’s degree from Northwestern University. In addition to her busy performing schedule, Ruth maintains an active teaching studio in her home – she placed at least one student in the All-State Festival every year for the past 15 years. Ruth is eager to get involved in the musical community in San Diego – especially the Flute Community! She and her husband are “empty nesters” and are looking forward to the beautiful weather in San Diego.
