About a week ago I showed you Part 1 to my Maui Watercolor sketch book from when I vacationed in Maui and sketched all of the beautiful sights! Here’s part two with even more to share. Maui Watercolor This was an elegant view, to see the palm trees thriving with the islands climate and the land receiving the water the ocean has to offer. Finishing up – The Look

My two Golden Retrievers, Yogi (the blond) and Sazi (the redhead), like to spend time with my students in the studio, helping everyone feel extra creative. Sometimes I glance over at them and get “The Look”. What does this look mean? To me, it is the “you are not paying enough attention to us, attention must be paid!” The Look – oil by Cathy Carey ©2014 16 x 20 What do you think it means? October 2014 – In progress – on the easel

My first painting this month was of a place I walk the dogs, near Bernardo Mountain. I see quail in our yard and am always amused by the posturing of the parents and the little chicks tumbling across the path. The Dad reminds me of a crossing guard, holding back traffic while the family relocates. The Mom looks in a panic, trying to keep all the chicks moving and safe. The chicks look like they are stumbling out into the light of day from the dark under the bushes, barely abl

In 2000 I was fortunate t

Watercolor Sketches and the Oil Paintings They Inspired

This group of pictures is going to show how I use my watercolor sketches to create a large more detailed oil painting. In the watercolor sketch I am working fast, completing it in a less than an hour usually. In the oil painting it can take several weeks to a month depending on the size. I am using ideas I “noted” in my sketch and playing them out more fully. Here are some examples! Let the Sun Shine In oil 24″ x 30″ ©Cathy Carey Let the Sun Shine I – oil 24″ x 30″ ©Cathy Care

Santa Fe 2004/2005

Here is and older sketchbook done in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2004-2005. As with all the sketchbooks, they are a place to gather ideas and feelings of a place at the time I am there and to later go back and relive in the studio. This scene is the old Artisan store when it was on Canyon Road. I was teaching in their back room. I did an oil painting from this sketch, called “Let the Sun Shine In”. Elfin Forest Acrylic Workshop

Over the Weekend I held a painting workshop to benefit The Escondido Creek Conservancy. Isabel and I had a load of easels and supplies to pack in, and we were thankfully helped by Jeff Swenerton of the Escondido Creek Conservancy, and students. The creek runs through the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, one of San Diego’s hidden gems in North County. We headed down the path to the right into the Live Oak Grove. This is an awesome spot to hold an art class, hike, picnic or j

Coyote Joy

Last night as I was falling asleep with Yogi my Golden Retriever at my feet, I could hear the yelps and joyful little barks of a pack of puppy coyotes that live near our house.
