The Source of Inspiration

Cathy Carey has a lot of experience that influences her artwork, and there are many things she has learned that influence her style. But today we can solve the mystery of where the influence for artwork comes from! If you’d like to see a recent video made of her inspiration you can check it out, here. Location, Location, Location!

If you’ve ever experienced real estate or taken trips you have realized that an ideal home depends on location and the landscape present. In a lot of Cathy’s paintings she takes trips to find beautiful landscape, sketches them like so; Arizona Landscape Sketch by Cathy Carey She and then pulls the best parts and makes a painting. Some are clear locations like Palm Springs Poolside, and others are based on the feeling you get while visiting! For example, looking at one of the

Maui Watercolor Sketches: Part 1

Here a few watercolor sketches I did a couple of years ago, I’ll be showing more in another blog post next week! We stayed at Kaanapali Beach Resort in Maui, and it was amazing! You’ll see below the kinds of beautiful views we got to experience. Maui Watercolor Sketch This water color was a view looking out into the sunset, the colors were so magnificent I had to start sketching it! Spring Stride 24″ x 30″ oil painting by Cathy Carey ©2015 Sketches I do a lot of drawings of animals in my sketchbook and then choose one for a series using different backgrounds and ideas of ways to incorporate it into a story. Here is the sketch for this one. Bobcat sketch by Cathy Carey ©2015 “Spring Stride” The Bobcat spirit in the garden. The idea behind this painting is to show the magical properties of an animal spirit roaming my garden amidst the succulents and agaves

Succulent Paintings of my Garden

Agave Paintings by Cathy Carey

My garden in Southern California where the drought has made itself a home, used to be lush with Mediterranean flowering plants! Once we started water rationing, I redid my hilltop garden to be a succulent haven. I have Agave, Aloe, and every kind of succulent you can imagine! Owl Paintings by Cathy Carey

Some of the things I was thinking about in creating this series were thoughts and questions of morality and mortality. In nature animals hunt and eat other cute animals we really like, and that can be an upsetting topic for a painting. At other times I apply the idea of an owl looking down at quail as being symbols of mankind, militarized factions ready to feast on the accidental innocent. Quite different thoughts than my symbolic ideas of owls as beautiful and wise. They are

New Coyote painting evolves

I was delighted to sell my original coyote painting – “Coyote Wonderland” in just  a few days, because a kind friend – Debra Baldwin the author of many terrific succulent gardening books (Succulents Simplified, Designing with Succulents and Succulent container Gardens), shared it on her Facebook page! Because so many people loved that painting, and I wasn’t ready to let go of my coyote on the hill, I immediately began another. This one is titled “Love the Good Earth”. See if

Succulent Garden Inspiration

My succulent garden continues to provide me with endless hours of  work and Inspiration! I’ve finished  the winter  re-build of the garden and have been painting scenes from it in oil. I love all the textures and pattens on succulents, aloes and agaves. I use the reality of the plant as a starting point and take it from there in terms of composition and color. My painting ideas are about things like working in the garden and showing the hands at work. Reaching out is about ne
