Under a Starlit Canopy marks the beginning of a new body of work inspired by the Year of the Horse, a symbolic exploration of movement, freedom, resilience, and the spiritual vitality of the natural world. Set within a luminous Southwestern landscape, the painting unfolds beneath a vast night sky, where stars shimmer above rolling desert hills, flowering plants, and a winding river that carries life through the terrain.
Two horses move quietly through the foreground, their presence both grounding and mythic. In many cultures, horses symbolize endurance, intuition, and the soul’s journey forward. Here, they serve as guardians of the land and metaphors for creative force itself — steady, instinctual, and guided by an inner rhythm. Their gentle motion echoes the flow of the river and the undulating forms of the hills, uniting all elements into a single, breathing ecosystem.
The landscape is rendered in vibrant, expressive color and rhythmic patterning, dissolving the boundary between realism and inner vision. Desert plants, wildflowers, and cultivated forms coexist, reflecting my ongoing interest in gardens and sanctuaries as sites of abundance, care, and interdependence. As in my Pollinator Garden series, the terrain becomes a living system animated by invisible exchanges of energy, nourishment, and creativity.
The starlit sky introduces a spiritual dimension — a reminder that earthly life is part of a much larger cosmic order. Beneath this celestial canopy, land, animals, water, and sky participate in a quiet choreography of belonging and renewal. The painting invites viewers to slow down, attune to the rhythms of nature, and recognize themselves as participants within this shared continuum of life.
This new Year of the Horse series extends my Southwestern themes into a more symbolic and archetypal realm, exploring how place, spirit, and creative resilience intertwine. Under a Starlit Canopy is both a celebration of the desert’s luminous beauty and a meditation on forward motion — the courage to move through uncertainty with trust, vitality, and wonder.
