Sitting atop a tall agave enjoying some berries on bush, this crow creates a focal point against the summertime clouds rising up from the mountains.
When I travel I fill up sketchbooks with blind contour sketches, which means I look at the subject most of the time, rarely looking at the drawing until the end. It creates interesting and exaggerated shapes and wonderfully expressive lines!
Back home in my studio I work up my sketches into paintings. I choose the color to express the way a place and time feels to me. I let my experiences percolate into memories, so I’m painting something I felt, not just something I saw. The colors in this are like a tapestry, richly woven threads of the pageant of life.
