Long Distance Email Instruction and Critiques

I work with students long distance by communicating with them through email. You can scan your artwork and email me, asking specific questions, or general feedback. You pre-pay for an hour or more of critique’s, cost is $30 per hour. It works great and one of my students who has done this kindly offered her opinion on how it works for her.

Student Testimonial:

I’ve taken a number of art classes and workshops. All of the instructors were terrific artists and all were very supportive. But most taught by demonstration. That showed me something about how they make their art, but not necessarily much about how I can improve my art. Teaching and making art are separate skills, and in my experience most artists do not have both. Cathy Carey does. It’s a rare and valuable combination.

I’ve been working long-distance with Cathy for some time now. I email her photos of my paintings and she responds with a critique. She has also occasionally offered mini-lessons, with links to websites, and has responded to art-related questions.

Cathy’s critiques are a nice balance of articulating what is working in the painting as well as making very specific suggestions for improvement. I paint regularly with two other artists who are generous with feedback and help. But Cathy is far more skilled at seeing what will improve a painting and communicating it in a way that gives me clear how-to instructions. She was quick to understand the kind of art that I would like to make and to shape her suggestions to help me move in that direction. Art is all about seeing, and Cathy Carey has a truly remarkable eye.

I have over and over again improved my paintings - even a couple that I thought were unsalvageable - using Cathy’s suggestions. Her fee in incredibly reasonable for the level of help that I get. If you could spend an average of perhaps $10 a painting to have it look better, wouldn’t you do it? I’m glad that I have!
