In this series I have explored the images of mission architecture amidst tropical and desert flowers. I have used these images to play with atmospheric perspective by showing things very close to the foreground in the detail of flower petals and then the distance of space and mountains behind a mission in the background. I have been interested in creating texture and depth through the use of contrasting and complementary color combinations along with different techniques with the watercolor. In this series I have also been painting the feeling of mood that occurs to me about the subject. It is a dreamy spiritual feeling with a hint of melancholy that I want to paint to express my feelings about the early California missions. I have a sense of lost innocence that I want to convey through the use of dramatic colors and a feeling of a connection to the earth through the flowers and the organic shapes. I once read that flowers are the physical manifestation of angels on earth. I thought that sounded beautiful and I was inspired by that thought when I painted giant flowers in the foreground of the missions. In this series of paintings I was inspired by the deep feelings I get from the missions and enjoyed the exploration of atmospheric perspective.
