Venice is a glorious place. In the Fall of 2004 we took a trip to Italy, and Venice was my favorite location. It is another world. I was fascinated by the play of light on the golden buildings reflecting in the milky turquoise water, and then the water bouncing back onto the buildings in a circle of light. The maze of waterways and narrow streets, the colorfully painted, decaying and yet still elegant buildings were so stunning. We had some beautiful sunny days followed by rainy mornings turning into misty evenings so I was able to see the colors change in every possible way. In my paintings of Venice I tried to capture the feeling of water everywhere, the dampness and the quiet lapping water always in the background, and the way the water and sky blended into shapes and ripples, reflections and shimmering light.
