In my series of watercolor paintings of deserts and tropical fish, I juxtaposed the idea of desert versus aquatic images. I thought it was intriguing that there were similar shapes between sea life and desert life. I was interested in comparing the bright colors against the muted colors. I wanted to compare images like the sea fan and the ocotillo; the patterns on the desert floor; the lines in the sand of water marks; the night sky dotted with stars as a pattern compared to the stripes and dots on tropical fish. It is fascinating to me that Southern California is a desert sitting next to the ocean. I was inspired by the vision of similarity versus contrast in this series.
